Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others, and it can start with small, intentional conversations. Encourage children to notice how others feel by asking questions like, “How do you think your friend felt when that happened?” or “What could make someone feel better today?” Reading books that explore different emotions and perspectives can also help children connect with experiences beyond their own.
Thanksgiving is a perfect time to show children the joy of giving. This could be as simple as donating toys, clothing, or non-perishable food items to local shelters or food banks. Involving children in the process, letting them pick items to donate or helping to package them, helps them understand that their actions can positively impact someone else’s life.
Kindness doesn’t have to be grand; it can be found in everyday moments. Encourage children to do something thoughtful for a sibling, friend, or teacher. Writing thank-you notes, sharing toys, or helping someone without being asked are small acts that teach children that caring for others is part of who they are.
